AAS 200: Notable Kentucky African Americans Webpage Assignment

Greetings, Class Community.

One aspect of our learning asks students to create a webpage that makes a significant statement about a notable African American from Kentucky or the surrounding region. We will visit Librarian Rienette Jones and the King Library's Special Collections on October 14, 2014.

A successful project will express considerable information about a notable African American from Kentucky and research this person in context with a national/historical figure that has made similar contributions in African American life and culture.

Convey your ideas using journalistic language or language similar to the language and vocabulary used in newspaper articles and credible blogs.

Dr. Hill

Here are examples of student research projects that students have produced in my courses. In class we will discuss best practices and how to build webpages.  An understanding of web audience preferences will add to this conversation.

  1. After visiting the library , I am very interested in doing my research webpage on Alberta Odell Jones. I have much in common with her, especially since my aspiration is to pass the bar and become a prominent attorney.

  2. I really am interested in doing my research webpage on either William Wells Brown (American's first black novelist. or Ballard William H Sr. (first AA man to open up a drug store). I am also looking for prominent black journalist from Kentucky who have made significant progress for our community so that would be something of my interest as well.

    1. good luck! I would advise doing a black journalist or Ballard William H. Sr. Williams Wells Brown is a favorite subject of history, but someone has already done some research on him. If you have a new perspective, lets discuss the research in more detail. Also consider the 2015 NCUR competition.

I am not sure if William "Bill" Wilson has been entered into the NKAA database. I am also not sure he has lived long enough to be catalogued.
