Without Sanctuary - A Discussion on Lynching

Greetings, Class Community.

We did not have much time to go into detail about lynching in class.  Please review the information on the Musarium: Without Sanctuary: Lynching Photography in America. (video)

"Searching through America's past for the last 25 years, collector James Allen uncovered an extraordinary visual legacy: photographs and postcards taken as souvenirs at lynchings throughout America."  http://withoutsanctuary.org/movie_play.html

How does this information challenge, affirm and/or complicate your previous knowledge and understanding of lynching in American Culture?  Do you think acts of lynching impacted the Black communities beyond the initial emotional impact? If so, how?

  1. This video was different only because I feel as though the narrator was very honest in his depiction of what was going on. He even went and said how he was afraid of the others and that being him I guess. It was just an interesting way to view things but it still just showed how brutal lynchings were and it is sad to know that something like this was ever happening.

  2. This video was very emotional to me to see all the lifeless bodies and people gathered around the bodies as if it was some party. I have been reading some different stories of lynching cases and each time it just reminds me that America doesn't realize how far we have come but we still have potential to be a better society.
